I know i have not been a very good tutor. It’s hard to say what I should have done better, but i guess i should have been more patient, more responsive, more thorough. I think i was too pushy with some of my tutors (which is not a bad thing). It’s not that i didn’t care enough, but i just didn’t get to my point.
My tutor experiences have been as varied as the people I tutor. I taught the same guy for five years, and we always did very well. Then a couple years ago, he started teaching me what I needed to know. He was too busy with a new job and decided to teach me less. I guess as time goes on i need to be more patient with my tutors, and not just give them what they dont need. I know i need to be better.
And the people who can afford to do tutoring are often not the people who can afford to actually learn. My current tutor is so busy, he can’t teach me what I need to be doing instead of him. I think that maybe my tutor’s life is too short to be worrying about the things I need to be doing. And I think that if I was to be my own tutor, I would probably take one of those classes that would teach me the things i need to know.
I think this is a great idea for any tutor. And I think that the same could be true for teachers. The things people need to know are often the things they don’t need. The thing is, in the world of education in the US, the very thing we should be doing the most is tutoring. That’s where the money is to be made. If we want to become the best teachers in the world, we need to be tutoring.
That’s the thing though. Tutoring is a very time-consuming business. That’s why we tend to prefer it to teaching. But tutors are just as essential as teachers, and I think that we actually have to start doing more of both. I mean, look at MIT’s computer science department. They have a lot of very smart people, but they also have a lot of tutors. And the best tutors are the ones who are willing to help their students solve problems.
We can’t be too strict about what we do. The best tutors are the ones who have had a lot of experience. Don’t be too strict.
We can also be too lax about the amount of time we spend doing things; after all we can’t be too active or too laid-back. The worst thing we can do is to get in the habit of doing a good amount of work and then getting lazy. The best thing we can do is to do a little work and then try to do a little more.
