It’s hard to believe I am the same person I was when I attended college. It was one of those things that was so easy to assume that it would go on forever and that all that was left of me would be me and my dog, and it didn’t take long for me to realize that I was wrong.
After a few years in my current job, I’ve been realizing that every day there are a few things that I still don’t really like about it. When I was younger, I didn’t mind the fact that for a few years I didn’t have a car, but now I don’t really mind having to leave home without it. And now that I am older, I just don’t want to be without an office.
I used to work for a large company that used to be like a giant middle school of the corporate world. In my day job, I spent a lot of time on my laptop and a lot of time on the phone talking to clients. I still like to talk to them, but I would much rather work from home.
I always thought I would be a great office manager, but I never thought I would be an effective one. But I am working towards that goal now. I am a graduate student at Knox College in Tennessee who has been offered the chance to work for the college’s business office. I applied for this position over the summer. It was kind of the dream job I wanted for so long. I had been working hard to get this job and was not just going to throw it away. Because when you are a student with a lot of free time, you go to the library to read everything you can, so I had a lot of study time to use up before applying.
On the application, the job description is pretty bare bones. I thought that would be a no-brainer because I had experience in business, but upon looking at the positions descriptions, I was not at all reassured. It said that the job was full-time and could involve some travel, which is very similar to the travel I would likely do anyway.
That’s not all. The company is said to be a for-profit, so all of the employees work for free—which is a little bit creepy. They have a few perks though. They say that the company is looking for people who are “passionate about their work” and have a “tremendous commitment to the profession and your work”. The company is listed as having a “commitment to the industry and your industry.
I mean, the company sounds pretty cool. I wouldn’t want the company to be paying me if I weren’t passionate about the work I’m doing, and I would definitely want it to be paying me. But I would also want to be paid in an industry where I could have a future with my current employer.
