While the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot, we may have to consciously focus on a task before we even consider it. For example, someone who is always on the phone and texting a lot may find it hard to change and focus on doing a work task. The reality is that we may have to consciously focus on the task first, or we may have to consciously decide to do it before we even think about it.
We don’t just have to remember to brush our teeth or do our hair this morning. These are a couple of things we need to start focusing on to keep ourselves from forgetting to do them. In addition, it’s important to have a plan for how we’ll do a task, especially if we’re not going to do it in one instant. If it’s something we’ll do multiple times in our day, it’s much easier to stick to it.
For many, therapy might be seen as a last resort, and it is. But if you think about therapy like a mental health treatment, you realize that it can be done in different ways and in a variety of locations. What is the best way to get help for a child with ADHD? What is a good way to give therapy to a veteran that is struggling with PTSD? Of course, each situation is different, and it can be hard to come up with a formula.
In one of the few places where therapy can be offered to the public, the University of Southern California offers occupational therapy for students. While this site seems to have lost its original purpose, the goal is still the same: to help you find the right therapists to see you. The first step is to be sure you are looking for the right therapists. A lot of people have trouble selecting the right therapist because it all depends on their budget, location, and other personal things. If you can afford it, I would highly suggest looking for therapists who have a reputation for being the best in their field.
One therapist I worked with in the past who was brilliant and talented was actually the only one I recommend getting to know. I was lucky enough to have a client who decided to go to college and get a degree in the field of psychology (which she has done). She did not go in for a degree in therapy or mental health. She went to university because she wanted to be a lawyer, and she became the best lawyer I know.
I was the first doctor to prescribe a course of psychotherapy for a patient who had severe social anxiety disorder. I made her feel like she was normal, and that she wasn’t going to hurt anyone. To this day she is still extremely afraid of going to parties or public places or events where people know her. She also takes medication to help with her social anxiety, but I believe that we’ve now been able to make her feel like she is not alone in her fear of crowds.
What a great way to help people who are afraid of crowds, but are still comfortable at parties or events.
I wish I had that skill as a school teacher. I wish I could just turn off my brain and just teach people how to be social.
