The same principles apply whether you’re trying to motivate kids to improve their grades or improve their overall grades. We used to send out an e-mail every day with the results of the kids’ grades. The kids would sign up, we calculated the average of the grades, and then you could go to the school and sign up for another e-mail. Over time we noticed that we were losing a lot of potential customers.
Once we analyzed the data, we found that the school was sending out an e-mail to the same people every day. If you told us that the school had 10,000 students, we would get 10,000 e-mails. We didn’t want to send out tens of thousands of e-mails, so we had to do something about it.
The school sent out an e-mail to the same people every day so that we could send them a new batch of students. This caused a large group of our e-mail list to go off the rails, as they had their e-mail addresses changed without notice. We sent the list a message informing them that we were adding their old addresses to our list. We were told this was in order to help prevent spam.
I feel bad for the people who got their e-mail addresses changed without notice. They were already on our list, and we’ve been sending them e-mails for years. I am not sure what that would have been like to not know. Plus, in a lot of these e-mails we were sending, we were informing people of some kind of change, and we were hoping to make good on our promise.
Because the e-mails are sent without a message, the person who sent them the message gets the message (and the message is sent). So, you are telling people you have an e-mail address and want to send it to them. That’s not good. In fact, the e-mails that were sent to everyone on the list were not sent. They were the ones that are not e-mails, but it was in the spirit of the list that we sent.
